Autumn is officially here! You know what that means… Pumpkin spice everything! Skip the pumpkin pie with the huge dollop of whipped cream and opt for a healthier option with no added sugar, but a TON of natural sweetness thanks to potassium-packed bananas, refreshing coconut water, and an unexpected secret ingredient. Completely gluten-free, paleo, and vegan!


The idea behind this smoothie recipe sprung on me at the grocery store when I spotted a massive display of canned organic pumpkin purée. I already had frozen fruit, kale, bananas, and coconut water in my cart for our typical smoothies, but once I scanned the display a bit more and discovered glass containers of pumpkin pie spice, I was struck by a healthy foodie light bulb moment.

Then I knew what I had to do… I had no choice but to fill my cart with that stuff because my pumpkin obsession would NOT be tamed with just a can or two of pumpkin purée. No siree! The moment I returned from my grocery store adventure, I managed to drink two overflowing glasses of pumpkin-y goodness. Bob did too. Come morning, we drank pumpkin spice smoothies for breakfast and have been doing so for the past week. I’m surprised we haven’t turned orange yet. 😉

Pumpkin IconINGREDIENTS

    1 medium banana (as ripe as possible)
    4 tbsp. pumpkin purée
    1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice (cinnamon, clovers, nutmeg, & cardamom)
    ½ cup frozen pineapple bits (the secret ingredient!)
    1 cup coconut water

 1  Put banana pieces into the blender.

 2  Add pumpkin purée along with pumpkin pie spice and pineapple bits.

  Pour coconut water over everything and blend until extra smooth.

 4  Enjoy the spiced autumn flavor of this healthy dessert smoothie!
